North Beach

Few San Francisco neighborhoods have a stronger sense of place than North Beach. Anchored by Washington Square and framed by the slopes of Telegraph Hill, this is a neighborhood where Italian heritage, literary history, lively cafés, and unmistakable San Francisco character come together. Columbus and Grant Avenues form the neighborhood’s vibrant spine, lined with beloved restaurants, espresso bars, bakeries, independent shops, and longtime local institutions. 

From 659 Greenwich Street, the best of North Beach unfolds naturally on foot. Start the morning with espresso at Caffe Trieste, pick up an Italian sandwich at Molinari Delicatessen, or wander down Columbus for dinner, drinks, and the neighborhood's unmistakable evening energy. Golden Boy Pizza is practically a neighborhood rite of passage, while Washington Square provides the perfect patch of green at the center of it all.

Just above the neighborhood, Telegraph Hill offers an entirely different rhythm—quieter, greener, and wonderfully removed from the bustle below. The climb up the Greenwich Steps or Filbert Steps leads through hidden gardens and hillside homes toward Pioneer Park and Coit Tower, with sweeping views across the Bay and city along the way.
